The setting up of a dialogue between the pluridisciplinarity about the quality of life in pediatric palliative care at the Queen Fabiola Children’s University Hospital with Emmanuel Lévinas and Paul Ricoeur’s ethics of the otherness and Carol Gilligan and Joan Tronto’s ethics of care
Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital, Belgium
Thanks to the support of BKF we were able to analyse Paul Ricoeur and Emmanuel
Levinas’s works. This in-depth reading of both those specifically complex philosophies
allowed us to determine which were the best angles of approach within each of them to
achieve the meeting at the heart of our project. Therefore we have been able to define what
use of the concept of narration for Ricoeur and responsibility for Lévinas would enable us to
make those directly effective in the field for paediatric palliative care. We have also started
the same process for ethics of care according Carol Gilligan and Joan Tronto.
The core of our project remains the elaboration of an field echo through the
philosophical tradition. We aim to produce a reading of these three ethical approaches
(Ricoeur’s narration, Levinas’s responsibility and Gilligan-Tronto’s care), and to make it able
to actively participate in the definition and resolution of the daily ethical issues related to
quality of life in paediatric palliative care.
